I wasn't here a month ago so I never sw those messages, but I recently
did an animation with a similar shield effect. Maybe somebody else has a
better way of doing it but I ended up created a smooth sphere at
strectched it so that it fit around my ship. I then applied the grid
texture with a line thickness of 1 to it and used fall off so that only
the side of the shield being hit by laser fire was bright and gradually
faded off. I don't remember the exact setting I used for falloff and a
few other texture settings, but just mess with them and you'll get it. I
of course parented the shield to the ship (which was moving over land)
and used a dissolve envelope so that it only apeared when being hit, and
to control it's intensity. Adding a nice lens flare with all streaks
turned off at the point where the laser comes in contact with the shield,
and using an intensity envelope to build up the flare (hot spot) looks
real nice (although not scientifically accurate). I don't know if this
is what you are looking for, but I hope it helps.
